Mary Jo Wehr Andersen  
Born December 15, 1937, died February 23, 1996  

 

Mary Jo Andersen, 58, Overland Park, KS, died Friday, February 23, 1996, at her home.  Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 26, at the D. W. Newcomer’s Overland Park chapel, 8201 Metcalf.  Cremation.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Hospice, the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City or the Learning Center at Children’s Mercy Hospital.

Mrs. Andersen was born December 15, 1937 in Lincoln, NE.  She attended the University of Nebraska, Johnson County Community College, and graduated from the St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing.  She practiced as a Registered Nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital and at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.  She was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and was a past president of the Kansas City Alumnae Chapter.  She was a past member of the Kansas City Junior Women’s Philharmonic and the Kansas City Ballet Women’s Guild. 

She is survived by her husband, Glenn E. Andersen, Overland Park, KS; daughter Cynthia Dahl, San Rafael, CA; Son, Peter Dahl, Edwardsville, KS; mother, Katherine Wehr, Lincoln, NE; father, Albert Wehr, Lincoln NE; brother, John Wehr, Tempe, AZ; stepdaughters, Diane Rose, Minneapolis, MN, Kimberly Barauskas, Decatur, IL, Kathleen Havener, Omaha, NE; and three grandchildren.

Richard LeRoy "Dick" Beachell, 72, Lincoln, died September 1, 2009 in Lincoln.  Born in Lincoln, 12/29/1936 to Harold and Betty (Lee) Beachell.  Former Lincoln Fire Department firefighter.  Owned and operated a cabinet making business.

Retired teacher, Lincoln Public Schools. 1970 Nebraska Industrial Education Teacher of the Year. Life Member: Nebraska Education Association; Nebraska State Education Association; Lincoln Education Association. Longtime member: Lincoln Amateur Radio Club with call sign of WOFTR starting the Lincoln Public Schools Amateur Radio Club at Lincoln Northeast; Warren United Methodist Church. Member: Lancaster County Civil Defense beginning their communication division. Chapter Member: Conestoga Campers of Lincoln. Remembered for his love of children and delighted in helping them achieve their greatest potential, a teacher to the end.

Continuing his legacy: daughters, sons-in-law, Donna and Dennis Craig, Iris and Ray Nelson, Avis and John Chaffin; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Veda Clark; Norma Chance; nieces; nephews; friend, who will miss him dearly. Lila Beryl Jackson Bowlin

Lila Beryl Jackson Bowlin, age 92, died October 18, 2002.  Born, Enosdale, Kansas, December 15, 1909 to Virgil and Mary Lesher Jackson, one of seven children.  Grew up in Fairbury.  Married, one son, Robert.  Earned B.S., 1945 M.E., 1960, both from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.  Taught at Roca and Pawnee City.

Teacher, guidance counselor, Lincoln Northeast High School from 1948 to 1975.  Sponsor, Rockets Club, Y-Teen, several senior classes, Rocket Review Talent Show.

Member, elder, First Christian Church; served on board and many departments of the church; Christian Women’s Fellowship; Quest study group.  Spent several summers working at Yellowstone National Park.  One of the organizers of women’s auxiliary to the WICS Home for Girls.  Member, Lincoln Area Retired Teachers Association, American Association of University Women, Phi Delta Gamma.  Active in Community Playhouse.  Remembered by students, fellow teachers and friends as being very professional, a dedicated teacher and counselor with a penchant for proper manners and “good and proper ethics.”

Survivors: brother, Lloyd Jackson, Lincoln; sister, Helen Anderson, Cedar Edge, Colorado; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Bowlin, Watsonville, California; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren.  Preceded in death by parents; most of her siblings; son; grandchild.

Betty Lou Bartels Clements
Born June 22, 1937, died September 12, 2005

After graduation, I went to work at Goodyear for 5 months.  In February, 1956, I joined the Navy Waves along with Penny Carriotto.  We went to Bainbridge, MD. I then, after Hospital Corps School, went to Charleston, SC.  2 months later, I met my future husband.  We were married March 16, 1957.  After becoming pregnant in May and getting discharged in July, we moved to Florida.

In January, our son was born and we moved back to Nebraska where we had 3 daughters.  We moved to Suitland, MD in March, 1965 where we lived until December, 1996 when due to ill health, we returned to Alabama.  While in Maryland, I worked for a family physician for 20 years until I had health problems.

I have now lost my husband of 47 years due to death and I’m trying to get things back on track.

Irvin L. "Irv," Deshayes, 66, Bristow, Va., formerly, Lincoln, died Sunday July 6. 2003. Born, Lincoln June 2, 1937, son of the late Albert and Zadie Mae Deshayes. Graduated, Nebraska Wesleyan University with a bachelor of arts and from University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a master of arts. He was an assistant professor of audiology at Barkley Memorial Center, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Mr. Deshayes was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, past president downtown Sertoma Club of Lincoln, a lifetime member of Sertoma International, Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, treasurer, Council of State Government, state of Nebraska Licensing Board, American Speech and Hearing Association and Nebraska Speech and Hearing Association. He also served in the Nebraska National Guard.

Kenneth Preston Freese, 90, Lincoln, died Wednesday (1/18/07). Born Manchester, N.H. ( 7/30/16), to Frank T. and Ruth V. (Claftin) Freese. School teacher, Lincoln Public Schools, 25 years, retiring in 1977. Member: Havelock United Methodist Church, choir director for 12 years, church lay leader three years. BA degree, Nebraska Wesleyan University (1949), MA degree University of Nebraska (1951). U. S. Army veteran, World War II, involved in the battles at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Was selected by the chaplain to become chaplain's assistant two days before D-Day.

Family members include: sons, Kent Freese, Portland, Ore., Steven Freese, Lincoln; daughter, son-in-law, Sarah and Steven Hay, North Carolina; grandchildren, Adria and Lisa Crabtree, Kimberly and husband Sean Rice, Laura Hay, Michael Hay; sister-in-law, Nadine Freese, Virginia; nieces, nephews. Bernard “Bun” Galloway
Born April 24, 1909, died January 3, 1984  

 

Bernard, “Bun”, Galloway, 74, and his wife Marie M., age 74, 6100 Huntington Ave., died Tuesday near Yutan in a traffic accident.

He was a retired coach, athletic director at Lincoln Northeast High School from 1941 to 1974, becoming head football coach in 1942.   Born Kidder, Missouri, and a Lincoln resident 45 years.  Member, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.  Member, past district governor, Bethany Lion Club. Graduate, Jackson High, 1938.  Graduate, Peru State College.  Earned master’s degree from University of Nebraska.

In his 15 years as head coach, Galloway’s Northeast teams compiled a 79-55-2 record.  Under Galloway, Northeast won state championships in 1943 and 1950; Mideast Conference titles in 1942, 1943, 1946, 1948, 1949 and 1950; and city championships in 1949 and 1950.  In 1957, Galloway retired from coaching to become Northeast athletic director.  He also worked with the sideline crews at University of Nebraska football games for years.

Survivors: son, Roger L., Lincoln and daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Gail) Axelson, Evergreen, Colorado and six grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m., Friday, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.  Interment, Lincoln Memorial Park. Memorials to, Northeast High School athletic department, Bethany Lions Club or church.

Born May 17, 1935, died January 4, 1989  

 

According to his brother Clarence, Herman worked for Contel as a Radio Technician.  He was struck by a ATSF train while driving a company truck at Harper Dry Lake and ATSF at Hinkley, CA.  He lived in Apple Valley, CA and was divorced. According to 20 year class reunion booklet, he had two children, Scott and Stacy.

The incident occurred in/near BARSTOW city. The rail equipment was reported to have been traveling at 055 Mph with 4 locomotive(s) and 65 cars(s). The TRUCK had been traveling in a northerly direction at 060 mph. The railroad was operating on main line track over a public road crossing. It was raining, during the day and the temperature was 50.  There were 1 death(s) and 0 injured in this incident and a Railroad Injury/Illness Report (Form FRA- 55a) was also filed.  The highway user was moving on the crossing and was reported to have not stopped.  There were 1 occupant(s) in the vehicle. Darwin Nelson “Dee” Haas  
Born June 22, 1936, died October 12, 2001

 

Darwin "Dee" Nelson Haas, age 65, of Maricopa, Arizona, went into the arms of his heavenly father on October 12, 2001 at Desert Valley Care Center from complications of cancer.

He is survived by his wife of almost four years, Sandra Haas, two sons, David Haas, and James Haas, two sisters, Diane Haas and Judy Lippold, his brother, Jim Haas, granddaughter, Jamie Haas and Megan Haas, grandson, Dylan Haas, and countless dear friends. Dee will be missed dearly and remembered in our hearts forever.

Dee was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, June 22, 1936. He served in the armed services and was honorably discharged. He moved to Phoenix and worked as an engineer for US West for 35 years. A wife, Margaret and a brother Jack preceded him in death. Dee was a devoted Christian, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He touched all those that knew him. His hobbies included: reading scripture, shooting firearms, golf and collecting antique watches.

Services will be held 11:00am, Friday, October 19th, 2001 at the Orangewood Church of the Nazarene, 2728 W. Orangewood Ave., Glendale. A burial will be held at Resthaven Park Cemetery, 6290 W. Northern Ave. A reception will follow.

Larry Hendrix  
Born November 29, 1937, died August 1, 1985  

Services for Larry Hendrix and his daughter Alicia of rural Garden City, Kansas will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Garden City.  Hendrix, 47, a former Knox County extension agent, and his daughter, 13, died Thursday morning at a Garden City hospital of injuries suffered in a car-truck accident near Garden City.

Hendrix was born in Lincoln and lived in Nebraska until he moved to Garden City in September 1974 to work as an area extension specialist for community development for the Kansas State University Extension Service.

He graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School and received his bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in animal science from the University of Nebraska.  He worked as an extension agent in Grant and was a part-time antique auctioneer. Hendrix was a Vietnam-era U. S. Army veteran.

Alicia Hendrix was born in Grant.  She had finished seventh grade at Kenneth Henderson Junior High School in Garden City, where she was a band member and played on the girls’ basketball team.  She was in the 4-H Challengers Club and played in the bell choir at First United Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be held for Alicia and her father at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the cemetery in Bloomfield.

Larry Hendrix’s survivors include his wife, Sharon, formerly of Bloomfield; two children, Mike and Stacy, both at home; father, Royce of Idaho; brothers Robert of California, Richard of Alabama, Phillip of Washington and Victor, address unknown; and a sister, Janice Devich of Denver.

Max R. Hester
Born July 20, 1917, died December 20, 2007
Max R. Hester 90, David City, formerly of Lincoln, died Thursday (12/20/07). He was born Beaver City, Neb., July 20, 1917. He was an educator and coach in Ord, Ravenna, Auburn, and Lincoln. He retired as Athletic Director at Lincoln Northeast High School. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Kearney State Teachers College and Masters Degree from the University of Wyoming.


Max was inducted into the Lincoln Northeast Athletic Hall of Fame, University of Nebraska-Kearney Athletic Hall of Fame, Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, Nebraska Officials Hall of Fame. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Bethany Lions Club, Nebraska Athletic Directors Association, Nebraska Track Association, National Athletic Directors Association, American Legion Post #3. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 75th Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge. Max was a member of the University of Nebraska Football Chain Gang for nearly 40 years.


He is survived by wife, Chelys; son and daughter-in-law, Morrey and Pam Hester, Winona Lake, Ind.; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Chuck Squier, Rushville; Mimi and David Ernst, Columbus; and Jan and Gary Giovino, Newport Beach, Calif. He is also survived by grandchildren, Jill (Hester) O'Sullivan, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Jim Hester, Indianapolis, Ind.; Jeff Hester, Scottsburg, Ind.; Jon Squier, Lincoln; Anne (Squier) Constantino, Omaha; Allison (Ernst) Van Heusen, Denver, Colo.; Matt Ernst, Bozeman, Mont.; and Katie Giovino, Denver, Colo.; as well as eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Dorothy Becker, Naperville, Ill.; and brother-in-law Bill Miller, Cedaredge, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters.


Memorial Services will be held at Roper & Sons Funeral Home on Saturday (12/22/07) at 2 p.m., with Dr. David Lux officiating. Private interment services will be at Fairview Cemetery, Lincoln. There will be no viewing. Idalee Kaiser, age 60, of Winner, South Dakota, died on Saturday, September 5, 1998, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from complications of leukemia

Idalee was born on December 20, 1937, at Winner, South Dakota, the daughter of Axel and Alice (Nelson) Johnson.  She attended schools in Colome, South Dakota, and graduated from Northeast High School in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1955.

She was united in marriage to Arthur “Bud” Kaiser on October 29, 1960 at Gregory, South Dakota.  She worked in the banking, real estate and insurance business most of her life.  She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Winner, the United Methodist Women, the Winner VFW Auxiliary and the Colome Legion Auxiliary.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed crosswords.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur “Bud” of Winner, SD; two daughters, Nancy Kewley and Lisa Kaiser, both of Sioux Falls, SD; one son, Kevin Kaiser of Wichita, KS; three grandchildren, Anne Feleciano, Shawn Kaiser and Sarah Kaiser, all of Wichita, KS; one sister, Anna Kavan of Omaha, NE; four brothers, Harold Johnson of Moses Lake, WA, Raymond Johnson of Michigan, Walter Johnson of Gregory, SD, and Richard Johnson of Evansville, Indiana.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services for Idalee were held on Tuesday, September 8, 1998, at the United Methodist Church in Winner, SD. Interment was in the Winner Cemetery.

Jacob Harvey Keim  
Born, August 10, 1937 died July 18, 1954  


Services for Jacob Harvey Keim, 16, 3072 U, who died Sunday at a local hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Methodist Church, the Rev. Harold Sandell officiating.

Deputy county Attorney Elmer Scheele said doctors were puzzled over the cause of the boy’s death.  Scheele said he was found very ill, on the street Friday afternoon and taken to the hospital, where he never regained consciousness.

A member of Grace Methodist Church, he had been president of the junior class and a member of Masque and Gavel at Northeast High School.  He was president of the State Association of Student Councils and recently attended a national student council meeting at St. Paul, Minn.  He had planned and directed special activities in high school and was interested in dramatics, speech and photography.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Jacob A. Keim; sisters, Mrs. Barbara Stewart and Phyllis Keim, both of Lincoln, and his grandmothers, Mrs. Myrtle Fink of San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Mary Keim of Tecumseh.

Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Kathryn D. McKee died Friday, December 27, 2002 in Darwin, Minnesota.  Mrs. McKee was born May 8, 1937, in Coffeyville, Kansas, the daughter of Arnold and Catherine Calder.  She grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and was an active member of the Clay Center, Kansas community for twenty five years, where she was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jack McKee, of Watkins, Minnesota; a daughter, Dr. Julie McKee and her husband, Dr. Chris McQuitty of Galveston, Texas; a son Jud McKee and his wife, Kristi of Minneapolis; a sister, Nancy Souliere and husband, Ronnie of Lincoln, Nebraska; a brother, Mike Calder and wife Carolyn, of Houma, Louisiana; father in law, John McKee of Clay Center, Kansas; three grandchildren, Rachel, Bobby and Johnny McQuitty of Galveston, Texas and numerous in laws, nieces, nephews and friends who loved her dearly.

A memorial Eucharist will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2002 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Clay Center, Kansas with the Reverend Susan Sawyer officiating.

Robin Stewart Mickle  
Born August 30, 1895, died September 20, 1957  

 

Funeral services for Robin S. Mickle, 62, Lincoln Northeast High School principal since 1945, will be held 3 p.m. Monday at First Methodist Church. Mr. Mickle, who lived at 1300 E, died Friday.  Dr. Carl Davidson will officiate at the funeral services and burial will be in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln.

A member of the Lincoln city schools system for 31 years, Mr. Mickle came to Lincoln in 1925, serving as principal of University High and later Jackson High School until 1940.  In that year, he became a counselor in the new Northeast High School.  He was named principal of Northeast in 1945, succeeding Ed Loder.

Before coming to Lincoln, Mr. Mickle taught from 1919-1920 at the Crete High School and from 1921-1926 in the Fairbury High School.  Born at Comstock, Mr. Mickle attended the Crete High School and graduated from Doane College in 1919.  In 1932 he received his M.A. from the University of Nebraska.  He had lived all his life in this state and 40 years in Lincoln.  A World War One veteran, he was a member of the First Methodist Church, The Masons, Scottish Rite, Shrine, Bethany Lions Club and was a past president of Northeast YMCA.  He was a member of the National Education Association; the Nebraska State education Association and the Lincoln Teachers Association.

Surviving are his wife, Loretta; who is principal of Pershing Elementary School; sons, James of Stillwater, Okla., and Ralph of Rapid City, S. D.; brothers, Guy of Nebraska City and Ted of Chicago; sister, Mrs. Betty Herman of Washington, D. C.; and two grandchildren.

Thomas C. Munson

A memorial service for Thomas C. Munson will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the First United Methodist Church, 1903 E. Euclid Ave., Arlington Heights. Visitation with the family will follow the service at the church. 

Born Jan. 12, 1938, in Omaha, Neb., he passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Northwest Community Healthcare Center. Tom was a graduate of the University of Nebraska in 1959 and an avid Cornhusker fan. After graduating from UNL, he was a commissioned officer in the Army. Tom spent his early career in various sales and marketing positions with Armour Grocery Products, M&M/Mars, Leaf Confectionary and Reed/Clark Gum. Since 1977, he owned several businesses that focused on specialty food brokerages, food distributorships and international consulting for food manufacturers. 

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nila; children, Susan (late Michael) Johnson of Lavon, Texas and Craig (Katherine) Munson of Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, Rachel Johnson, Stephanie, Tim and Drew Munson; and his brother-in-law and wife, Lyle and Corinne Cumming of Gresham, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Mark. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gary Lee Portsche, 71, of Olathe , passed away at his home July 21, 2009. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Bruce Funeral Home, 712 S. Condolences may be sent to www.brucefuneralhome.com Gary was born February 21, 1938, in Lincoln , Neb. , to Paul and Virginia League Portsche, Jr. He grew up in the Burlington Railroad town of Havelock , Neb. , and graduated with the class of '55 from NE High School in Lincoln . Gary attended Nebraska Wesleyan University for two years. He was in the Nebraska Air National Guard and was honorably discharged after serving 17 years. Gary married Patricia Ann Everrett March 28, 1959, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. The love of Gary 's life was his family. He was never seen at a family event without a Nikon camera around his neck. His passions and interests included traveling (he had been to a total of 17 countries), genealogy, the high school reunion committee for NE High, Ham Radios, computers, and working out at the "Y." Gary was a third-generation railroader- grandfather Paul Portsche and father, Paul Jr., were both railroaders employed by the CB & Q Railroad. His career stretched from 1955 until his retirement in 1992. Gary 's only sibling, Robert L Portsche, also worked for the railroad. Gary was very proud of the fact that his eldest son, Douglas, and his eldest grandchild, Chad M Rolstad, were and still are employed by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, making this a five-generation railroad family. The railroad life took Gary and his family all over the Midwest and finally to their retirement home of Olathe , Kan. , in 1992. Gary was preceded in death by his father, and granddaughter Isabella Grace Portsche. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of the home; mother, Virginia Portsche, Lincoln, Neb.; brother, Robert L Portsche, Arlington, Va.; children LeAnne Prenovost (Pete) and Lisa Wilkinson (Matt), all of Phoenix, Ariz., Douglas Portsche, Saginaw, Texas, and Mike (Nancy) Portsche of Spring Hill, Kan.; seven grandchildren: Chad (Erin) Rolstad, Tyler (Cassie) Rolstad, Nicole Rolstad, Allison Herrera, Kaylynn Portsche, Ian Wilkinson, and Adrik Portsche, and four great grandchildren: Jakob and Anna Rolstad, and Audrey and Ainsley Rolstad.

Elizabeth B. (“Betty”) Reeder, 79, of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia died Monday, April 19, 1993. She was born December 26, 1913 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of Lillian May and Earl Casswell Barker.  She retired from the Lincoln Public School system after 35 years of teaching forensics, drama, and math. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Columbia Chapter, Lincoln, Nebraska and the Smith Mountain Lake Bridge Club. She is survived by her husband, Stanley W. Reeder; her daughters, Dr. Enid L. Burrows, Professor of Mathematics, Plymouth State College, Plymouth, N.H., and Dr. Jody D. Brown, Professor of English and Chair of the Fine Arts and Religion Division, Ferrum College, Ferrum, Va; her son-in-law, Dr. Joseph G. Brown, Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Mathematics and Physical Science Division, Ferrum College, Ferrum, Va; her grandchildren Mr. J. S. Brown and his wife, Amy, Jennifer J. Brown, Robin N. Burrows, and Lannette Elizabeth Burrows; her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Barker; her father-in-law, Mr. Harry H. Reeder; and former students and friends. She made her final contribution to teaching by designating her body for medical research. A memorial occasion will be scheduled later. Barbara (Weishel) Saylor, beloved Wife, Mother and Grandmother, 75, Mendota Heights, Minn., formerly Lincoln, died Friday (6/3/05). Barbara was a member of the Junior League and Thursday League of St. Paul, she taught English and journalism at both Washington and Como Park High Schools in St. Paul.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, John; daughters, Susan Roth and Carrie (Tom) Cole; grandchildren, Jordan and Adrienne Ziebarth, Kevin, Rebecca, and Andrew Cole; sisters-in-law, Sandra (Jim) McLean and Sherrill (Steve) Lahr. She was born September 1, 1901, the daughter of Millard and Anna (Billman) Shaver.  She was a member of First Christian Church and moved to Newton from Randall on Nov. 12, 1973.

Harland V. Taylor
Born April 18, 1905, died September 7, 1991

 

Harland V. Taylor, 86, a former Lincoln Northeast School Principal died Saturday, September 7, 1991.  Taylor, 6800 A St., retired in 1970 after 21 years in the Lincoln school system, 18 of them as principal at Northeast.

Before being named assistant principal at Northeast in 1953, Taylor was principal at Hastings High School.  He also held administrative positions at Broken Bow, York, Clearwater and Elmwood.  He taught at Dewitt.

Taylor was born in Shubert and received his bachelor’s degree from Peru State Teachers College and his master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Nebraska.  He was a member of local, state and national teachers associations; Nebraska School Masters Club; Lincoln Chamber of Commerce; and the Northeast Lincoln YMCA board.  He was a member of the Capitol City Christian Church, where he was a former Bible schoolteacher and elder and participant in the music program.

Survivors include his wife, Verna M.; son, Gaylen Taylor of Bellevue; Granddaughters, Elizabeth Ann Sheets of Lincoln, Jennifer Jay Voegtli of Bellevue; and four great grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Capitol City Christian Church, 7800 Holdrege St.

Lawrence J. Tepley, 83, 2800 South St., died Saturday, December 17, 1988.  Retired teacher, Lincoln public schools, 43 years. Member, Grace Lutheran Church, Northeast AARP, Golden Huskers Southeast Camping Club.  Past president, Lincoln Teachers Association, Havelock Lions Club.

Survivors: wife, Gertrude; sons, daughters in law, Mar, Nancy, Milwaukee, Larry, Frances, Omaha; brother, Eugene, Salem Ore.; sister Kalixta Jindra, Clarkson; six grandchildren.

Merlin H. Walters
Born September 22, 1905, died May 27, 2005

Merlin H. Walters, 99, Lincoln, died Friday (5/27/05). He was born to Harry Robb and Rose Anna Jordan Walters in rural Ute, Iowa, on Sept. 22, 1905. He graduated from Ute High School (1924), and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln with a bachelor of science (1931) and master in science (1939) in education and school administration. He taught at Scottsbluff High School and served as superintendent of Sunflower Consolidated School and Garland Public School. In 1939, he moved to Lincoln, where he taught math and science at Havelock High School. In 1942, he was transferred to Belmont as principal, and he later served as principal of Havelock elementary and junior high schools, Norwood Park, Meadow Lane, Dawes and Clinton elementary schools. He was a lifetime member of Nebraska Parent Teachers Association, a member of the Lincoln Education Association, the Nebraska State Education Association, National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa and Havelock Lions Club. He worked through the Nebraska Legislature to establish a 12-month pay schedule for teachers and helped with legislation establishing the State Teachers' Retirement Program. After retirement, he was a member of the Silver Haired Legislature, an honorary member of the Lincoln Area Retired Teachers Association (which presented him the Golden Apple Award) and a lifetime member of the Nebraska Association of Retired School Personnel. He was made an admiral of the Nebraska Navy on the occasion of his 90th birthday.

Merlin became a member of First Christian Church when he moved to Lincoln in 1926, and since 1939 had been a member of Havelock Christian Church, where he served for many years as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and elder. For the last 10 years, he had been a member and daily participant of Calvert Senior Center.

Merlin married Elizabeth Bell in 1933. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before her death in 1993.

Survivors include daughters, sons-in-law, Mary and Lee Reed, Jean and John Dale; grandchildren, spouses, Susan and Richard Gifford, Scottsbluff, Marika and Timonthy Crosby, recently of Rangoon, Burma, Carol Reed-Klein and Robert Klein, Sterling, Mark Dale Thompson, Lawrence, Kan., Sarah Dale-Piersol and Pete Piersol, Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Joyce, Lucinda and Jonathan Gifford, Aiva, Nathyn, Esther and Sarah Crosby, Pierce and Chase Thompson, Ellie Piersol. Other survivors include brother, Harold Walters, Santa Rosa, Calif., sisters-in-law, brother-in-law: Elsie and Jim Bishop, Lettie Nilsson, all of Lincoln, Alice Bell, Lakewood, N.J., 11 nephews; 14 nieces; two nephews-in-law; one niece-in-law; their spouses and children, and many other relatives and friends. Merlin was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Rose Anna; wife, Elizabeth; half-sister, Mary Walters; brothers, sisters-in-law, Wilbert and Margaret, Clayton and Merle, Lester and Pearl Walters; sisters, brothers-in-law, Lucile and Marion Delanty, Hazel and Gordon Cory; sister-in-law, Dorothy Walters; brothers-in-law, Warren Nilsson, Harry Bell; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, Catherine and John Stroh, Nellie and Harold Holmberg, Pat and Perry Smith; nephews and four nieces.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Bethany Christian Church, 1645 N. Cotner, interment, Lincoln Memorial Park. Visitation: 4 p.m. today until 9 p.m. Monday, with family greeting friends 6-8 p.m. today, Roper and Sons Mortuary, 4300 O St. Memorials may be sent to or designated for The Havelock Christian Church Scholarship Fund, (6520 Colfax, Lincoln, NE 68507) or Lincoln Municipal Band (216 N. 11th St., Suite 202, Lincoln, NE 68508-1401).

Eibe Burchardt Wear
March 8, 1937, died June 6, 1987  

 

Eibe Wear of Gainesville, Florida, died Saturday, June 6, 1987 at her home.  She was 50.

Mrs. Wear was born in British Cameroon Africa and lived in Lincoln, Neb., before moving here 20 years ago.  She was a housewife and substitute teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Wear of Gainesville; her children, Christopher A. Wear of Orlando and Nicholas Wear and Mara A. Wear, both of Gainesville; her parents, Hans Burchardt, Sr. and Gerda E. Molle Burchardt of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, Hans Burchardt, Jr., Scranton, Pa.; and two sisters, Kera Guitter, Lincoln, Nebr., and Gabriele Burchardt, Petersburg, Neb.

There will be no funeral service for Mrs. Wear.  The family requests that expressions of sympathy may be in the form of donations to the A. Dedler Graeffe Scholarship fund at the University of Florida.
